- ========
-
- The following is an _informal_ summary (from Saul Rosenberg)...
-
- OpenDoc is an object oriented, software component based system. Info is
- stored in "compound documents", which are container files holding
- components (parts). Each component may be understood and edited by
- different software tools. The goal is to encourage mix and match of
- small, lean, focused components, rather than huge monster suites that
- are hard to develop and harder to extend.
-
- OpenDoc will be an integral part of Copland (the next Mac OS, 1997).
- IBM has announced plans for the next major release of OS/2 Warp (1996).
- The primary competitor is Microsoft's "OLE".
-
- CyberDog is a set of WWW Internet access components for OpenDoc, and
- demonstrates many of its capabilities. The components are "internet-
- aware", and can take actions, such as having a live Internet link in
- the middle of your documents. E.g.: start a web browser at a given
- URL, or start FTP to retrieve current info, or automatic email to get
- quick feedback on the readers of your document. There are many more
- possibilities for interactive content.
-
- Come on Wed Jan 24 to see and hear the full story!
